DIY Natural Room Spray
- Makes: 30ml
- Container: By Me 30ml Amber Glass Atomiser
- Difficulty: Easy
- Time: 2 minutes, plus 24 hours to rest
Two ingredients. Ten blends. A room spray that smells like your home, not a chemical factory.
Most commercial room sprays rely on synthetic fragrance, propellants and fillers you'll never see listed on the label. This one is just pure essential oils and perfumer's alcohol. Nothing hidden. Nothing extra.
Pick a blend, measure your drops, and you're done.
Your home. Your recipe.
What You'll Need
- 120 drops (about 6ml) essential oil, from one of the blends below
- Perfumer's Alcohol, to fill
- 1 x By Me 30ml Amber Glass Atomiser
- 1 x Essential oil funnel
Everything here comes in the By Me DIY Low-Tox Essential Oil Room Spray Kit: 12 essential oils, 100ml Perfumer's Alcohol, four 30ml amber glass atomisers and a funnel. Enough to make four sprays and every blend on this page.
Why Just Two Ingredients?
Perfumer's Alcohol is the carrier. Essential oils don't dissolve in water, which is why water-based sprays separate and need constant shaking. Alcohol dissolves the oils fully, so every spray carries the same scent. It also evaporates quickly, leaving fragrance in the air rather than damp spots on your furniture.
Essential Oils are the scent. Pure plant oils, nothing synthetic. Each blend below is built with a light, bright top note, a fuller middle note, and a grounding base note, so the scent opens up and lingers rather than fading in seconds.
No water means no emulsifiers and no preservatives. Just what you can see in the bottle.
Method
- Choose your blend from the list below.
- Using the funnel, add the essential oil drops to your By Me 30ml Amber Glass Atomiser, one oil at a time.
- Fill to the top with Perfumer's Alcohol.
- Screw on the atomiser and swirl gently to combine.
- Label your bottle with the blend name and date.
- Leave to rest for 24 hours before using. This lets the oils settle into each other and the scent round out.

To Use
Give the bottle a gentle swirl, then mist two or three sprays into the air, away from your face. Use in living areas, bedrooms, bathrooms, entryways, or anywhere that needs a lift.
A little goes a long way. Start with a few sprays and build from there.
A Few Important Notes
- Flammable. Perfumer's Alcohol is flammable. Never spray near candles, open flames, gas cooktops or heaters.
- Spray into the air, not onto surfaces. Undiluted essential oils can mark polished timber, leather and some fabrics. Patch test first if you want to use it on linen.
- Not for skin. This is a room spray, not a body mist. Avoid spraying directly onto skin or into eyes.
- Pets. Some essential oils, including tea tree, peppermint and eucalyptus, can be harmful to cats and dogs. Spray in a well-ventilated room away from pets, and keep bottles out of their reach.
- Kids. Store out of reach of children.
- Storage. Keep in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight. Amber glass helps protect essential oils from light, so they hold their scent for longer.
Make It Your Own
Once you've tried a few blends, create your own. Keep the total at 120 drops and use this simple ratio as your starting point:
- Top notes, about 30% (36 drops): the first thing you smell. Light and bright, they fade fastest. Sweet Orange, Lemon, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lime, Mandarin, Lemon Myrtle, Lemongrass, Peppermint, Spearmint, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree.
- Middle notes, about 50% (60 drops): the heart of the blend. Lavender, Rosemary, Geranium, Rose, Palmarosa, Clary Sage, Chamomile, Marjoram, Pine, Juniper Berry.
- Base notes, about 20% (24 drops): the anchor that makes the scent last. Cedarwood Atlas, Ylang Ylang III, Cypress, Cinnamon Bark, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Patchouli, Frankincense, Myrrh, Benzoin.
Some oils sit between categories. Ylang Ylang III and Cypress work as middle or base notes, so you can use them in either role. Cinnamon Bark is very strong, so start with just a few drops and build from there.
Write down every blend you make. When you land on one you love, you'll want to make it again.
